Dry Body Brushing; What are the Benefits?

With Spring on its way, many of us are craving the slightly warmer temperatures and longer days. Several of us are also probably thinking about finally waving farewell to our dry, itchy winter skin, and grabbing our reliable bottles of body scrub to do just that. But, have you ever considered replacing your favourite bottle of scrub with Dry Body Brushing?

What is Dry Body Brushing?

Dry Body Brushing is the technique of daily body massage, using a dry stiff-bristled brushed to exfoliate the skin.

There are several linked benefits to the technique, including the removal of dead skin cells and exfoliating dry, flaky skin. It can also help to increase blood flow and circulation, as well as stimulating the nervous system, giving the participant a feeling of invigoration.

There have been several claims over the years that dry body brushing can also help with digestion and improve the appearance of cellulite. Although many believe this to be true, there is no scientific evidence to support these claims.

Dry Body Brushing & Ingrown Hairs

Whether you’re an occasional waxer, or regular shaver, ingrown hairs can be pesky, painful and unsightly. But did you know that dry body brushing can aid the prevention of ingrown hairs?  Regular body brushing encourages skin cell turnover and renewal. Not only does this keep the skin looking fresh and supple, but it also coaxes out pesky, trapped hairs and unclogs the skins pores.

Hints & Tips

  • It’s important to ensure that you never brush over broken or damaged skin. This includes areas of irritation, inflammation and infection.
  • Dry Body Brush your skin before you shower. Remember the key word for the success of this technique is ‘dry’, and therefore no water should be involved. Shower after you’ve brushed your skin to remove the brushed, dead skin cells.
  • Don’t over brush! Soft, smooth strokes lead to better results. Your skin should never be red or sting after body brushing. If this is the case, apply a lighter pressure.
